During the last few years, St.John's wort herb, Hypericum perforatum L., was proclaimed the "herb of the year" in several countries (Germany, Poland), and is therefore considered one of the most attractive herb of the decade. At the Sobina locality (surroundings of Vranje) a new finding of Hypericum perforatum L. subsp. angustifolium, the very rare subspecies of St.John's wort herb, has been discovered.

The aim of this investigation was to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil of the mentioned herbal subspecies, by GC-MS method. GC-MS analysis was carried out at the apparatus Hewlett Packard, G-1800 GCD, with the column HP-5 (30 m x 0.25 mm).

The results point out 37 components, their total relative share being 81.27%. Cariophyllene oxide (15.29%) and trans-anethole (10.54%) have the biggest relevant share.
