In this paper we have determined the influence of an hydroalcoholic extract of Salvia officinalis L. on the rat's uterine morphometric parameters.

We worked with 7 groups of 8 virgin, female, albino Wistar-Bratislava rats, weighting 65-95 g. One group was sham-ovarectomized, and the other 6 groups were ovarectomized. One group of these 6 was the control group, one was treated with estradiol (E), 2 groups were treated with two different concentrations of Salvia extract (SE) and the remaining 2 groups were treated with E+SE (SE in the same 2 concentrations) E was injected i.m. 0.75 micromoles / kg / 2 ml / day for 3 days, SE was administered p.o. 2 x 5.0 ml / kg / day for 4 days, preceding with one day the administration of E. After the rats were sacrificed (24 hours from the last E treatment or equivalent time for the other groups), the uterus was taken to study. We performed the following measurements: organ weight (total, dry-weight - 110oC - and by the difference the water-content). We calculated the organ-index for all 3 weights (mg tissue / 100 g body-weight).

After the E treatment all 3 morphometric indexes were significantly increased, compared to the control-group. SE does not have a statistically significant influence on those parameters. The highest values of the indexes were observed in the SE + E groups.

These results the trophic effects of E on the uterus and the absence of this effect of the SE. However SE has a statistically significant potentiation of the trophic effect of E.
