The endemic plant Sideritis scardica Griseb. is a small shrub, distributed in the Balkan peninsula. In Bulgaria the species occurs rarely in Pirin, Rhodopa and Slavjanka mountains. The species is under governmental protection and is included in the Red book of Bulgaria. The species is used in the traditional medicine as anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and cytostatic agent. In Bulgaria it is applied for currying bronchitis, bronchial asthma, stenocardy, angina, etc. The main constituents are flavonoids and iridoids. Low quantities of essential oil are also present. The present paper applies to field experiments, concerning the sowing procedure, cultivation techniques as well as the growth and yield are discussed.

Propagation of species is predominantly by seeds sowing in open-air seeds-beds in seedling nursing in October-November or rarely in spring. The seeds have slow germination and are needed of stratification. The total yield can be expected to be about 130 kg/dka of dry herbs in the first year of cutting and about 300- 400 kg/dka in the next years.
