Possibilities of medicinal plant breeding in Slovakia are much wider than provided by present-time spectrum of available cultivars. The stuff of co-workers of the Department of Crop Production and those of the Botanical garden of SAU in Nitra deals with genepool of medicinal plants within the submitted scientific and technical project (C 519/3) "Rescue and Protection of Endegered Plant Genepool in Slovakia. The matter of the subject stage "Medicinal Plants Genepool" is also a part of this project.

Basic recultivation and preparative activities needed for establishing of the introduction field of medicinal plants were done in the first year of the project solving period. We plan to complete and enrich genetic resources of medicinal plants by genera Salvia, Mellisa, Echinacea, Amaranthus, Agrimonia with species perspective form therapeutic aspect in the following years of the subject stage solving.

For the perspective conception of medicinal plants growing in Slovakia there is necessary to consider economical aspects of their production as well as the demands of pharmaceutical industry.
